Placement you can see with the eye open

Makeup for hooded eyes that stays visible.

Place the structure while looking straight ahead, lift colour slightly above the natural fold and keep the deepest detail controlled around the outer lash line.

Quick answer

Keep the eye open while mapping the crease, place transition colour just above the fold, concentrate depth on the outer third, and use a thin liner so visible lid space remains.

  • Prime lightly and set only where creasing is a problem.
  • Build thin layers rather than one dense stripe of shadow.
  • Look straight ahead before deciding the height and angle.
  • Waterproof mascara and transfer-resistant liner help in the fold.

01

Identify the movable space

A hooded eye has skin that folds over part of the movable lid when the eye is open. The amount can differ from one eye to the other and often changes with expression or age. It is an eye structure, not a flaw to correct.

Traditional tutorials that build a crease with the eye closed can hide most of the work when the eye opens. Instead, look forward into a mirror and mark the shadow high enough to remain visible. Then lower the eye to blend and refine.

Mirror position

Keep the mirror straight ahead rather than below the chin so you see the eye as other people do.

Brush size

Use a smaller blending brush than the one in a wide-lid tutorial so pigment stays controlled.

02

Build a soft daytime eye

Start with a thin layer of eye primer. Sweep a matte mid-tone taupe, soft brown or muted rose slightly above the natural fold. Keep the inner eye light and place a satin highlight on the inner third only if it does not emphasise texture you would rather soften.

Press a medium shade into the outer lash line and blend it upward in a small wedge. Curl the lashes and apply mascara from the roots. This creates definition with the eye open without needing a thick line across the entire lid.

A practical path

A visible four-part eye shape

  1. 01

    Map above the fold

With the eye open, place a soft mid-tone where it remains visible. Blend the top edge while keeping the brow bone clean.

  2. 02

    Deepen the outer third

Press a deeper shade close to the outer lashes and lift it slightly towards the tail of the brow. Stop before it closes the whole lid.

  3. 03

    Finish with thin definition

Tightline or draw a fine outer liner, curl lashes and use mascara that resists transfer onto the upper lid.

03

Adapt a smoky eye

Choose a soft brown, plum, navy or charcoal instead of beginning with black. Keep the deepest colour close to the outer and upper lash line, then graduate it into the mid-tone above the fold. Blend outward rather than filling the whole space with one dark block.

On the lower lash line, use a narrow amount of the mid-tone and connect it to the outer upper shadow. Leave the inner lower eye lighter if a full ring makes the eye feel smaller.

More lift

Angle the outer blend towards the brow tail and keep the lower outer edge clean.

More softness

Use satin taupe or plum and diffuse the boundary with a clean small brush.

04

Liner, lashes and transfer

A thick liner can occupy all visible lid space. Tightline between the upper lashes or keep the line very fine until the outer third. Draw the wing with the eye open, then connect the shape with the eye lowered. If the fold cuts through a conventional wing, a small bat-wing shape can appear smooth when the eye is open.

Choose lashes with a lighter inner band and more length towards the outer half, or use individual clusters. Very dense full strips can hide the shadow and touch the brow area. Let liner dry fully before looking up.

Try before you decide

Plan the placement before opening the palette.

Compare a soft lifted eye and a deeper smoky direction on your photo, then recreate the placement in thin layers.

Questions people ask

Reviewed 19 September 2026

Where should eyeshadow go on hooded eyes?

Place the transition shade slightly above the natural fold while looking straight ahead. Keep the deepest colour controlled around the outer third and lash line.

Is eyeliner bad for hooded eyes?

No. Thin liner, tightlining and a small outer wing preserve visible lid space. Draw the angle with the eye open so the fold is part of the plan.

What eyeshadow finish suits hooded eyes?

Matte shades make placement easy to control, while satin can add light to selected areas. Use chunky sparkle carefully if it transfers into the fold.

How do I stop eye makeup transferring?

Use a thin primer layer, transfer-resistant liner and mascara, and let each cream or liquid layer dry before looking fully upward.
