Get the stud size right for your lobes.
A stud is a few millimetres of decision that you wear every day. Too small disappears, too large crowds a small lobe and droops. Preview the size and stone on your own ears before you buy.

How it works

The adapted result, with your identity held steady Add a photo of your ear and face
A clear side or three quarter photo with your ear visible and your hair tucked back. Studs are judged at conversational distance, so include enough of your face to judge proportion.

A reference you can actually take to a professional Describe the stud
Name the material (pearl, gemstone, plain metal ball) and the size if you know it. Torn between two sizes? Preview both. With studs the difference between right and wrong is often a single millimetre step.

A clear before-and-after preview on you Check both piercings if you have them
If you wear a second stud, preview the pair together and check the spacing and the graduation. Save the combination, not just the single stud, so you buy a set that was designed rather than accumulated.
A stud earring reference that is actually yours
- The stud at real scale on your own lobe, not on a model's ear in a macro product shot.
- Two sizes side by side, so the millimetre question is settled by looking.
- Pearl, gemstone and metal versions compared, since each reads a different size at the same width.
- A saved reference for a second piercing combination, with sizes noted for both holes.
Small item, exact proportions
Studs look simple and are not. The right size depends on your lobe, not on the stone's price. A large stud on a small lobe covers it entirely and tips forward. A tiny stud on a generous lobe reads as an afterthought. Stone choice changes the apparent size again: a pearl reads bigger than a gem of the same width because it is opaque and round, while a clear stone lets light through and reads smaller and brighter. Placement matters too, since a piercing that sits low or off centre changes which size looks balanced. And if you wear a second piercing, the two studs are one decision, usually graduated, larger in the first hole and smaller in the second. Uptone puts the exact stud on your own ear, so you can settle size before anyone posts you a pair.
Where this struggles
Sparkle and stone colour flatten on screen
A stud earns its place by catching light as you move, and a still preview cannot show fire, lustre or the exact depth of a coloured stone. Judge size, setting and proportion here. Judge the stone itself from jeweller photos, video or in person before spending seriously.
Droop is a placement problem, not a size problem
If your piercing sits low or the hole has stretched, a heavier stud will tip forward whatever the preview shows, because the preview hangs it perfectly. For larger stones, check the backing type as carefully as the stone: a secure, supportive back does the real work.
Your photo stays yours.
Uptone edits your own photo rather than replacing you with a generic model. It never rates your appearance, and you can delete your photos whenever you choose.
Questions people ask
- What size stud suits small lobes?
- A small to medium stud that leaves a rim of lobe visible around it. Once a stud covers the whole lobe it stops looking like jewellery and starts looking like a button, and it is more likely to droop. Preview the size you want against one step down; small lobes usually choose the step down.
- Can I plan a second piercing look before getting pierced?
- Yes. Preview two studs together, the larger in your existing piercing and a smaller one above it, and check the spacing against your ear's shape. It will not tell you where a piercer can safely place the hole, but it settles whether the graduated look suits your ear before you commit.
- Pearl or crystal for every day?
- Pearl reads softer, larger and more classic, and it flatters most colouring. Crystal reads brighter and smaller, and it can look stark against very fair skin in a large size. Preview both at the same width: the pearl will look like the bigger stud, and that is exactly the information you need.
